About the Scriptures and the Word, 31 verses, (large print)
Old Testament
1. Exodus 22:25 (esv), 25.“If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him.
2. Deuteronomy 15:7-10 (esv), 7.“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, 8.but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. 9.Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the LORD against you, and you be guilty of sin. 10.You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.
3. Deuteronomy 23:19 (esv), 19.“You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest.
4. Deuteronomy 28:1-20 (esv)Blessings for Obedience
1.“And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2.And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. 3.Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. 4.Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. 5.Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. 6.Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. 7.“The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. 8.The Lord will command the blessing on you in your barns and in all that you undertake. And he will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 9.The Lord will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in his ways. 10.And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you. 11.And the Lord will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. 12.The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13.And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, 14.and if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
Curses for Disobedience
15.“But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. 16.Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. 17.Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. 18.Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. 19.Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. 20.“The Lord will send on you curses, confusion, and frustration in all that you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and perish quickly on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken me.
5. 1 Samuel 2:7 (esv), 7.The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts.
6. 2 Chronicles 1:11-12 (esv), 11.God answered Solomon, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12.wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor, such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like.”
7. Psalm 37:16-17 (esv), 16.Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked. 17.For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.
8. Proverbs 3:9 (esv), 9.Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce;
9. Proverbs 10:4 (esv), 4.A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
10. Proverbs 13:11 (esv), 11.Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.
11. Proverbs 17:16 (esv), 16.Why should a fool have money in his hand to buy wisdom when he has no sense?
12. Ecclesiastes 5:8-20 (esv), 16.The Vanity of Wealth and Honor
8.If you see the oppression of the poor and the denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be shocked at the sight [of corruption]; for a higher official watches over another official, and there are higher ones over them [looking out for one another]. 9.After all, a king who cultivates the field is an advantage to the land.
The Folly of Riches
10.He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its gain. This too is vanity (emptiness). 11.When good things increase, those who consume them increase. So what advantage is there to their owners except to see them with their eyes? 12.The sleep of a working man is sweet, whether he eats little or much; but the full stomach (greed) of the rich [who hungers for even more] will not let him sleep. 13.There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: riches being kept and hoarded by their owner to his own misery. 14.For when those riches are lost in bad investments and he becomes the father of a son, then there is nothing in his hand [for the support of the child]. 15.As he came naked from his mother’s womb, so he will return as he came; and he will take away nothing from all his labor that he can carry in his hand. 16.This also is a grievous evil—exactly as he was born, so he shall die. So what advantage has he who labors for the wind? 17.All of his life he also eats in darkness [cheerlessly, without sweetness and light], with great frustration, sickness, and anger. 18.Behold, here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat and drink, and to find enjoyment in all the labor in which he labors under the sun during the few days of his life which God gives him—for this is his [allotted] reward. 19.Also, every man to whom God has given riches and possessions, He has also given the power and ability to enjoy them and to receive [this as] his [allotted] portion and to rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God [to him]. 20.For he will not often consider the [troubled] days of his life, because God keeps him occupied and focused on the joy of his heart [and the tranquility of God indwells him].
13. Ecclesiastes 7:12 (esv), 12.For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
14. Malachi 3:10 (esv), 10.Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
New Testament
15. Matthew 6:1-4 (esv), Giving to the Needy
1.“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2.“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3.But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4.so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
16. Matthew 6:21-24 (esv), 21.For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22.“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23.but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24.“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
17. Matthew 13:18-23 (esv), The Parable of the Sower Explained
18.“Hear then the parable of the sower: 19.When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20.As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21.yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22.As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23.As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”
18. Matthew 13:44 (esv), 44.“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
19. Matthew 19:21 (esv), 21.Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
20. Matthew 21:12-13 (esv), 12.And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 13.He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
21. Mark 12:41-44 (esv), 41.And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42.And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43.And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44.For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
22. Luke 3:12-14 (esv), 12.Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” 13.And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14.Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”
23. Luke 12:28-33 (esv), 28.But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29.And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30.For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31.Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. 32.“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33.Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.
24. Luke 14:25-33 (esv), 25.Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26.“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27.Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28.For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29.Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30.saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31.Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32.And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33.So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
25. Luke 16:13-15 (esv), 13.No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” 14.The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. 15.And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
26. Romans 13:8 (esv), 8.Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
27. 1 Timothy 6:10 (esv), 10.For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
28. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (esv), 17.As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18.They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19.thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
29. Hebrews 13:5 (esv), 5.Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
30. James 5:1-6 (esv), 1.Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 2.Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3.Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. 4.Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5.You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6.You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.
31. Revelation 3:16-20 (esv), 16.So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17.For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18.I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. 19.Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20.Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
